Pro-life student contest winners to be given awards at Jan. 14 conference

Detroit– Six students from the Detroit area won honors for their testaments to the gift of human life.

Entering the Archdiocese of Detroit’s “Life is a Gift” student contest, the young men and women wrote essays, created art, and even submitted multimedia presentations. Here are the students who were recognized as this year’s contest winners:

• Hope-Marie Olivan, an eighth-grade student at St. Joan of Arc School in St. Clair Shores, won for her artwork, “The Joy of Life” (see page 1).

• Jamison Terbrack, a seventh-grade student at Shrine Academy in Royal Oak, won for his essay, “Life is a Gift.”

• Taylor DeGregory, a seventh-grader from Immaculate Conception Parish in Ira Township, won for her song, “I have the Lord by My Side.”

• Dillon Stevenson, an eighth-grader from Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Plymouth, won for his video “Life is a Gift.”

• Nicholas Taylor, a 12th-grader from St. Joan of Arc Parish in St. Clair Shores, won first place for his artwork, “A Life to God.” Tayloris part of St. Joan of Arc’s Center for Exceptional Children.

• Emily Chudy, a 12th-grader from SS. Cyril and Methodius Parish in Sterling Heights, wrote the winning essay, “The Gift of Life: A Call to be a Part of God’s Plan.”

The students will be awarded a certificate and a $100 check from the Knights ofColumbusduring the second annual Life is a Gift conference, an all-day event at Sacred Heart Major Seminary on Jan. 15. Hundreds are expected to attend the conference, which is dedicated to exploring life issues.

The contest was promoted through Catholic schools and religious education programs at parishes. Seventeen schools and parishes sent in essays for the grade school division of the contest, including Our Lady of Good Counsel, Shrine, St. Lawrence in Utica, St. Thecla in Clinton Township, Our Lady Queen of Martyrs in Beverly Hills, St. Damian in Westland, St. Anastasia in Troy, Our Lady of Victory in Northville, Immaculate Conception, Sacred Heart School in Dearborn, St. Joan of Arc, All Saints School in Canton, Guardian Angels School in Clawson, St. John in Monroe, Divine Mercy in Davisburg, St. Margaret of Scotland in St. Clair Shores, and St. Sebastian School in Dearborn Heights.

The high school division included entries from Divine Child in Deaborn, St. Catherine of Siena Academy in Novi, SS. Cyril and Methodius, St. Joan of Arc, Detroit Catholic Central in Novi and Everest Collegiate in Clarkston.
