Detroit — Fr. Trent died April 27 from cancer at Holy Family Hospice in Tucson, Ariz. He was 75.

Although he remained a priest of the Archdiocese of Detroit throughout his priesthood, Fr. Trent had ministered outside the archdiocese since 1986.

He spent the rest of his active ministry in the Archdiocese of Phoenix, the Diocese of Tucson and the Diocese of Santa Rosa, Calif.

He was born James Frederick Trent in Detroit March 2, 1936, to James F. and Bernice (Kehrer) Trent. He attended St. Boniface Grade School and Sacred Heart Seminary High School and College, before completing his priestly formation at St. John’s Provincial Seminary in Plymouth Township.

He later went on to earn a master’s degree in adult education from the University of Michigan and a doctorate in ministry from St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore, Md.

He was ordained to the priesthood by Cardinal John Dearden on June 2, 1962.

He served as associate pastor at St. Alphonsus Parish, Dearborn; St. Martin of Tours Parish, Detroit; and Precious Blood Parish, Detroit; and as pastor at Our Lady Queen of Hope Parish, Detroit. He also served as administrator of St. Christine Parish, Detroit.

Fr. Trent further served as diocesan spiritual director of the Cursillo Movement (1971-84); director of Continuing Formation of the Clergy (1978-83); and chaired the Archdiocesan Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs for the last two years of his membership on the committee.

In 1986, Fr. Trent moved to the Diocese of Tucson, Ariz., where he served as director of its Office of Clergy, Diaconate, and Lay Formation, and in prison ministry. In 1998, he moved to the Diocese of Santa Rosa, Calif., and served as administrator of a number of parishes, and in prison ministry with the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

His final assignment was at St. Joseph Parish in Fortuna, Calif., where he also served as administrator of four other parishes.

Upon his retirement he returned to Tucson.

Fr. Trent is survived by his sister, Dorian Borovsky of West Bloomfield Township.

A Memorial Mass was celebrated Monday, May 16, by Msgr. Ricardo Bass, with Fr. Donald Worthy as homilist, at Prince of Peace Church in West Bloomfield Township. His remains were interred in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield.
