Fr. Gerald A. Nitoski died July 26. He was 83.
Born July 31, 1926 in Detroit to Stanley and Margaret (Burg) Nitoski, he attended St. Benedict grade and high schools in Highland Park, Sacred Heart Seminary, Detroit, and the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C.
He was ordained June 2, 1951, and served as an assistant pastor at St. Matthew Parish, Detroit; Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Detroit; St. Thomas the Apostle Parish, Ann Arbor; and Our Lady of Sorrows Parish, Farmington Hills.
Fr. Nitoski was named pastor of St. Joseph, South Lyon, then was associate pastor of St. Sebastian Parish, Dearborn Heights; and then pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish, Detroit.
He completed his clinical pastoral education at Central Islip State Hospital in New York, and then served as a chaplain at Providence Hospital, Southfield.
After that, Fr. Nitoski left active ministry and no longer presented himself as a priest.
He was predeceased by his parents and one brother, Norman. He is survived by several cousins.
A funeral Mass was celebrated July 30 at St. Benedict Church, Highland Park. Burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Detroit.
